My friend Linda (another BIG PAT FAN) gave me the address for this site. I especially enjoyed rea ing their guestbook comments to you and the interviews. Thanks, especially to Dave, but to all the contributors. The web is a great way to stay in touch, and now that I'm finally taking my maiden name back after 17 years, I am more interested than ever in my family history. My father (Howard etheny) died July 17. I doubt I will ever get over the pain, but I think this will help keep me in touch with my roots in a very positive way. Two of my brothers (Stan and Gene) have already signed on. We would be very interested in any information anyone has on any Samuel Metheny. He was my father's father (my dad was born in 1926). Sam disappeared one day when my dad was very young. Then Dad was orphaned at the age of 12. To the day he died he never k ew what happened to his father. He has one older brother (76) still living. A note to Pat: great music. The "Missouri" cd was my favorite relaxation music of all time. I gave it to my stepmom after my father died because she was having so much trouble sleeping. I tried to replace it this weekend, but the store was "sold out" (goo news, huh?). |

I live just a few miles from the site of the Stafford County Hope Plantation where Daniel's tombstone was found. Our common ancestor is Ensign James (Revoluti n). I have the paternal line back to 1080 something in France (not many details - the original is in French - hope to pursue getting this manuscript from Library of Congress and translated. Metheny was a life long friend of Abe Lincoln and Mary Todd. He was "best man" at their wedding. Noah W. Meth ny was the clerk who signed the marriage license. I'm not certain, but believe their father, Charles R, who was a licensed preacher and practiced law, may have been Abe Lincoln's law partner in Springfield, IL. Never heard the story about a midwife, but that may be so, too. By the way, Pat...my son, Kevin was with MTV/VH1, and, I believe you all met. He's also amusingly depicted as Pig Virus in Howard Stearn's "Private Parts", and is part of a composite part known as Pig Vomit in the movie. One more " ame" connection: John David Metheny, son of William H. Metheny married Kate Bumgardner, whose sister is the mother of James Bumgardner, known to movie fans as James Garner. So, by marriage and a little stretch, we can claim James Garner as a kissin' cous n. |

As far as I can determin, everyone named Mathena, Matheny, Metheny and other adaptations find their roots in France, in the small village of Mathenay, southeast of Paris and about 100 miles west of Berne, Swi zerland. The first person known to use the name was Count Guy de Vaudrey, Segneur de Metheney, b 1080. All Methenys in the US are decendents of Danieel Metteneye (Mathenia) b 1638 in Surrey County, VA. I am stumped finding the father of my great grand ather, William H. Mathena, Metheny, b9/5/1837 in Dyersburg, TN. His mother was Rebecca. Her maiden name may have been Pierce (?). Wm. H's father may have been from GA or TN. Would have been born around the turn of the century and would have spelled the name Mathena. If you can help me, please let me know.
