Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois, Iowa
Ancestors of Linda Hardman and Christine Henderson

The 1850 census found Elijah, along with some of his brothers, living in Kanawha Co., Va (W.V.). Three more children were born there in the Charleston area. By 1854, they were back in Illinois, again in the old Military Tract counties of Fulton, McDonough, and Warren. Elijah preached at several different places. His brother Samuel had already moved on to Iowa, and become a minister, but Elijah was joined in Illinois by brothers John C. and Willliam H., who had been living in Kanawha Co. William would also enter the ministry.

On Christmas Eve, 1856, in Fulton Co., David D. married Mary Jane Curfman, a local girl born and raised there. They were married by Elijah Rutledge, J.P. The next December, a baby boy was born, and died 3 weeks later. By the time of Civil War, David and Mary Jane had a little girl, and another baby boy. David and his brother John William were of prime military age. When David joined Company I, 57th Ill. Vol.. Infantry, he was 6'1", slim, with grey eyes and auburn hair. John enlisted at Macomb, in a regiment that became the 10th Missouri Infantry. By the end of 1862, David was back home, health broken by an army camp disease, discharged as unfit for further duty. In February of 1863, Elijah and Eleanor's 18-year old daughter Harriet died of pneumonia. That Spring, General Grant's army was closing in on Vicksburg. On the 14th of May, during the battle of Jackson, the 10th Missouri was engaged and John William was killed. He was 22.

In the Spring of 1864, Elijah packed up his surviving children, and he and Eleanor moved on to Jasper Co., Iowa. Only David D. was left behind to raise his family in Illinois. Elijah and Eleanor were married for 60 years, and survived 6 of their 11 children. . Eleanor died 2 Dec 1893, and Elijah 29 July 1896. They are buried in Prairie City, Iowa.
