I am David F. METHENY, a Computer Specialist, in Southern Illinois. Along with my wife of many years (Rita K. (COX) Metheny), we have developed a keen interest in tracing our Family roots. I have been tracing the METHENY line for over ten years, and my maternal line SHEDELBOWER, for about the same amount of time. My wife Rita watching me search the Web, decided to find her roots in the COX, HAYDEN, SMITH line, Now it became so much of a battle to see who got the Computer first, that when I returned from my job stint in Washington DC, I had a broadband Internet connection put in, and second computer for Rita, and a third for our grandson Jeffrey. The Metheny (Matheny) line go back in the USA to the mid 1600's (Daniel Mathena(y) - b. 1638 in England, d. Stafford County, VA, 14 Oct 1685).

The Shedelbower line has been difficult to find prior to 1840, as they were emmigrants from Bavaria. Also the spelling has different variations as in those days few could write, and when they did, it was generally phonetically. Thus I have SHEDELBOWER, SHEDDLEBOUR, SCHEDELBAUR and a few more. I do know that my Great Grandfather Joseph was born in Jasper County Illinois in 1844, served in the Civil War (See my civil war pages), and is buried in Jasper County, Ste Marie Cemetery. His father (Spelled Martin Schedelbaur) was listed in the 1850 census as a emmigrant from Bavaria. (Germany). His sister in the census listing shows born in 1838 in Bavaria, and Joseph born in Illinois in 1844. So the emigration was sometime between 1838 and 1844. So far that has been the stumbling block. I have had a couple contacts in the Muniich area of Germany, who know of some Scheddelbaur families still residing in the area that once was "Bavaria". Maybe one day a connection will be found.

My G-GrandFather: JAMES P. METHENY ** (1817 - 1899), Son of Benjamin Metheny and Sarah (??) Metheny.
My G-G-GrandFather: BENJAMIN METHENY ( 1791 - 1879) - 11th Child of Ensign James Metheny and Mary Lamayne Metheny).

NOTE: It appears that most of the decendents (sons, and grandsons of Ensign James who migrated to Illinois started using the 'E' Form of the name. METHENY, as all land records have them listed as Metheny.
