In the early 1800's Moses Matheny, and his family migrated from the Shenandoah Valley of (W)Virginia to Pennsylvania. He had purchased a large farm, and when the Erie Canal opened in 1833, He built a stone building along the banks of the Canal. This became a widely known landmark, and had quite a number of famous visitors. Stories abound about this landmark which stood over 100 years. Kelly Matheny from Santa Ana CA, sent in the copies from the book on Rock Point. (Thanks Kelly). See more about the Tavern from the Pages supplied by Kelly! Right Here. | |
Rita and I like to share our immediate family, and our grandkids. (Don't all grandparents?). This picture is of Jeffrey and Alicia taken a couple months ago. They all seem to grow so fast.
Jeff is 14 now, and his latest accomplishment is that he won "Second Place" in a Regional Art Contest put on by the Area School District. He placed 2nd out of about 40 schools. Alicia, now three going on ten, takes Gymnastic and Dance lessons, and what a ham she is. Every time they come to visit, we get entertained with her "songs", her tumbles and Somersaults, plus on her tippy toes, she does her "piroets" (sp). Grandma and Grandpa is so proud of her. But we have another Big Surprise. Come July, our son David and his wife Lisa, will have their FIRST. And like many young folks now days..... well Its a BOY! So another grandson will be shown off soon!
Blue Moon March 31st. Easter coming and here's all them April Birthdays that still keep coming along! So all of you have a Happy one too:

To all of you, Happy Birthday, and many more to come!! Well the Reunion Plans are forming, and all MRR Committee are working to make this something great for all of us, and our families to come. Here is the latest view of the proposed Memorial. Check the MRR Site for all the latest news.
Visit the MRR Central Site for the latest Committee news. | The Andersonville Prison during the civil war was built to house 10 to 20 thousand prisoners. During its two and a half year life, over 60,000 Union prisoners were house there at one time or another. Some 32,000 Union soldiers died there, under fed, overcrowded, and little food or medicine for the sick, and wounded. Having found a site which lists over 35,000 of the one that were there, both living and dead. Here is a short list of the ones I found during a search of the lists. The last one is not a Matheny/Metheny, but that is my Mothers grandfather. Joseph Shedelbower was mustered in at age 17, captured at Chicamagua, GA. at age 19, and released just over 20 years old!

As you all know we (Rita and I), maintain several web sites on the Internet. Actually I do most of the web work, Rita comes up with the ideas. (some of the better ideas were her doings). Then I transpose them into web publishing. Visit some of our sites.. and let us know what you all think! |
Things are blooming here, in southern Illinois. Our branch of the Metheny are planning a May 16th Reunion near Moonshine this Year. (Yes there is a Moonshine, Illinois). We always have a very good turn out, and a nice day for all. All my family made a trip to Washington, IN this last month, for another funeral. My nephew Kenny Metheny passed away unexpectedly, and at a young age of 35. We all resolved to meet again very soon, under more ideal and happy conditions. It is so unfortunate that families, and the ones who you dont see very often, usually come for funerals. My niece was there whom we haven't seen in at least 15 years. So it is resolved to do something about it!
