A METHENY TREK TO WEST VIRGINIA

Asa MethenyFrom the reunion, I have gotten more and more emails, and new people who have heard about it. All wanting to join the group. But I have noticed something else. A real Renewed Interest by some of the current members. A very good example of this come as this months Feature Story. With all the number of "Metheny-Matheny" people living right here near the center of it all, I wondered why there wasn't more effort to uncover some of the local Stones... Well apparently Bob and Mary Metheny of Woodbridge, VA. got bitten (or a bigger bite)... Early last Month, after the renunion, they took a weekend trip to the Preston County (Pleasant Hill and Beech Run Districts) in West Virginia. They were seeking to find the burial place for our Ensign Jame Matheny (or might have been Metheny).. Pictured here is the Headstone of Asa Metheny, at the Cress Cemetary. Not only this one, but they uncovered a cemetary that has long since been forgotten, grown over, and almost inaccessable. But what they found there is of interest to all of the family. Hello to My Paw Paw

Ever since I have been here in Virginia, I have asked my son... Get me more pictures of my new grandson. I don't get to see him everyday like they all do. So he finally took some, scanned them, and Here is CJ Metheny, saying "HI' to his Paw Paw.

CJ

And so since it has been awhile, I thought gee, one good picture isn't enough, with just one of Little CJ. I hear through the "Grandma" grapevine, that Daddy is really taking this Daddy bit seriously... Good going Son.... 8-)

MRR GROUP NEWS

The group has really grown since the reunion. And the closeness of all is apparent. I have gotten many people who want more information, and notified when we start plans for the 2001 Reunion. Well folks. you all will be on the LIST. Even with the "Disconnects", the NC/SC group who dont connect directly.. I think we are getting very close to making the connections. Looks like though it may (MAY) come before Daniel.. such as possibly in England, Scotland or Ireland, as we do know that not all of the English family came here, and there are definite indications of a Scotland/Ireland connection. We certainly will follow that out!

MATHENY PLACES

Our Dear Rev. Ralph Metheny, as many of the MRR members know, started collecting names of places and things that carry the name, "Matheny" or "Metheny" and let me be the first to say... they came in from all over the world. Last Count with todays email we had collected 96 "Things" or "Places" that carry the name. I wont try to list them all here, as the email group all have gotten updates every several days. But I will try to name a few of the more Significant ones.

Pat Metheny, Famous Jazz Guitarist. (His relatives attended the reunion.) Has won 14 Grammy awards over the last 20 years. From Lee Summit, Mo.

Jeanne Felkel Matheny, Tampa artist and retired University of Tampa art instructor, Tampa Florida, graduate of Florida State College for Women, class of 1942. (given by Ralph R. Metheny, from article in Tampa Tribune, March 24, 1996)

Rev Dr. C. Howard Matheny, Greek scholar, author of "GOOD NEWS FROM GOD", minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and president of the Florida association of Christian Churches.

Matheny School, Springfield, IL (named for Judge James H. Matheny, father of Miss Eleanor Matheny, secretary for many years of Springfield Board of Ed, also was best man at Abraham Lincoln's wedding.)

McGuire and Matheny Law firm, Springfield, Illinois (James Harvey Matheny, Abe Lincoln's Best Man).

Matheny School and Hospital, Peapack, NJ. Founded by Walter and Marguerite Matheny for their son Chuck who was born with cerebral palsy. It is for moderately to acutely handicapped persons, residential and commuting. Round-the clock care is provided. Special research is being carried on by this unusual school and hospital.

Guess we should also mention a couple of our members who in their own right, are among ones I think are noteable. Thomas Matheny, President of the Episcopal Council, and Judge Michael David Matheny.

These are only a sampling of the more noteable in current history. There aremany more, but these I found interesting to share. Thanks Ralph for compiling the list.

GENEALOGY WORLD

With the FREE membership now offered, I have well over 970 members. I hope to add several other Family Group sites similar to MRR. I have a couple groups getting site pages ready to post. I also am working on a Matheny-Metheny GEDCOM database to post. If any one is interested in building a family site of your OTHER lines (similar to the MRR Central), let me know.
