One has to wonder what it must have been like in 1660, when Danil Mathena (age 22), and Michael Mathena ( age @ 19) jumped on a ship, for the Colonies. You have to know the reasoning, the political cultures in England at the time, and the events to understand their motivations. Young men in England, especially not the first born, were usually left to fend for themselves. Many years of unrest and a civil war in England, that resulted in the "Be-heading of Charles I", left little opportunity for young men in England. Danil and Michael must have been tempted by the News, that the James Colony, after many years of starvation, attacks by Indians, and dis-loyal members... was now becoming a stable community, and other colonies were sprouting all over the east part of the New World, and Tobacco was selling for 4-8 Pounds Sterling. The draw of wide open free lands, easy and rich soil, and off to the "New World" they ventured. So being close to where I am, and for the many who can never get to visit JamesTown. I did it for you! Ever since I was a young girl, I can remember that my mother would cut out a poem from the newspaper or copy one from a book. I left home at an early age, then Dave and I lived all over the US and in Canada. My Mother would send me pretty or funny poems. That would always let me know, that although we were miles apart, I was very much in her heart. So I got my love of poems from my Mother. So now we have the internet and so much out there to explore. Our nephew Steve and his Wife Amy Metheny, and others all email me some of the most beautiful and inspirational poems. I usually end up sharing them with our children, just as my Mother did with me. So I am passing along a couple of my very favorites that I have received recently, and a third one for someone very special to Dave and I.
I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time that
I see you walk out the door,
If I knew it would be the last time I'd
hear your voice lifted up in praise,
If I knew it would be the last time, I
could spare an extra minute or two,
If I knew it would be the last time I
would be there to share your day,
For surely there's always tomorrow to make
up for an oversight,
There will always be another day to say our
"I love you's,"
But just in case I might be wrong, and today
is all I get,
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young
or old alike,
So, if you're waiting for tomorrow,
For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely
regret the day,
And you were too busy to grant someone,
So hold your loved ones close today, whisper
in their ear.
Take the time to say "I'm sorry" "please forgive me"
"thank you" or "It's ok". -----Author Unknown...
That needs my humble skill, A certain job I'm meant to do, Which no one else can fulfill.
The time will be demanding,
There is a special place in life,
There is a mark that I must leave,
There is a special place in life,
There is a hand that I must hold,
There is a special place in life
There's always a tomorrow and the
Just little old David, and his Sister Mary Ann (Metheny) Rasmussen. This was taken somewhere around 1948. Ain't they just the cutest little kids ever??
The GW site houses the MRR Central Site, but it is open to all of the Internet, for a FREE
membership. I did this to get more traffic for the MRR, and for genealogy researchers in general. But
for those who haven't visited for awhile.. check it out. I am also offereing some new tools to
use for research.. Check out the Site! |
This next poem (Your Cross), is dedicated to Diana Jones especially. Rita and I feel that we know she is facing some difficult times in the near future with surgery and all. So what better than to put something here for her. The Cross Room applies to any and ALL of you that have that have "crosses" to bear,as we all do...... We hope the inspiration helps.
"Lord, I can't go on," he said. "I have too heavy a cross to bear." The Lord replied, "My son, if you can't bear its weight, just place your cross inside this room. Then, open that other door and pick out any cross you wish." The man was filled with relief."Thank you, Lord," he sighed, and he did as he was told. Upon entering the other door, he saw many crosses, some so large the tops were not visible. Then, he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall. "I'd like that one, Lord," he whispered. And the Lord replied, "My son, that is the cross you just brought in." When life's problems seem overwhelming, it helps to look around and see what other people are coping with. You may consider yourself far more fortunate than you imagined.

Adam Zachary Eschbaugh - Nov. 1st
The MRR Group is still growing, and there were some comments floating around about people getting OFF the list. Well the list is still about 80 strong. But for sake of clairity, lets state the original "Ground Rules". I try to moderate the list somewhat, but it is open to all, for whatever comments you wish to make. BUT the general rule is, and always has been..... for family stuff to share.. send it to the group list. If you have "specific" information for one or two, send it to THEIR email address. Get it from the members lists, or ask them for it. The only thing considered inappropriate is "advertising", or those "forwarded" emails, which means little to anyone. So... just use the list with reason, for genealogy mostly. Thanks for listening! |
The trees are turning the many colors of fall, both here in Virginia, and back in Illinois. I heard thru the grapevine (Granny Grapevine) that Jeff got a pretty good report card this trip around. Maybe all my harping did some good! The better news is that I got to spend a week with them all last month, and will again this month. Help chopping up a turkey I hear! And since I will NOT be able to make it for the Birthday Party, to my little sweet grandaughter, Alicia, who will be 4 on November 8th. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Paw Paw will be in to see you in about three weeks.. PROPOSED - AUGUST 2001 Stafford, VA. |
