David D. Matheny was born 26 Feb 1836, in Adams Co., Ohio, oldest son of the 11 children of Elijah Mathena and Eleanor Thomas Davis. Elijah was born in Ohio 16 Aug 1811, and Eleanor 2 Jan 1811, somewhere in Virginia. They were married across the river, in Covington Ky., 23 May 1833, by Nicholas Elson, J.P. The following year, 1834, Elijah became a Methodist preacher. Of Elijah's 10 brothers, 5 others are also believed to have served the Methodist ministry. So far as we know, Elijah and Eleanor settled in Adams Co. for about 10 years, and their first 6 children were born there. Sometime in the mid-1840's they went to Illinois, as in August of 1846
their 3-year old, Daniel Clarkey died of scald, and was buried near Beardstown. Other brothers of
Elijah may have been nearby, as his younger brother Samuel had been married in Fulton Co., Ill. in
1843. See more decendents Here, Pictures and text contributed by Christine Henderson. | |
With all the new information, and the upcoming proposed reunion at the Aquia Church this summer, I received this picture from our Reverend Ralph. This picture was taken at the location of the Hope Plantation, currrently owned by Mr. Fillipovich.
They are pointing to the area where the Daniel Stone was found. For all that don't know the story of the stone. It was removed from that spot, and taken to West Virginia. After it was found to be illegal to remove historical artifacts from Virginia, it was returned to the Aquia Church. There it has been kept since that time. It is in very poor condition, with very little of the original inscription readable. But the pictures taken many years ago show the inscription was: D.M. 14 Oct 1685. Our reunion, and dedication will be to place a new stone on a cemetary lot (purchased by the Matheny Association) and dedicated to Daniel and Sarah Mathena. They have been considered as the progenitor of almost all Matheny/Metheny/Mathena's in America.
Happy St Pat's day, spring is coming in a couple weeks or so. Here's all them March Birthdays that still keep coming along! So all of you have a Happy one too:

The Group keeps on growing. So to update everyone on what is going on. We have an attorney in Virginia, (Mr Coon), he is arranging for us to form a non-profit Organization. This will allow all who wish to donate to the memorial fund, a place to make the donations. We also are planning to ensure that all who donate will be listed as part of the organization, and owners of the cemetary lot and memorial. The Organization will also provide a Certificate of membership suitable for framing, and passing on to our children. | The children of Elijah and Eleanor: 1. Sarah Ann, b. 16 Mar 1834, Adams Co. As you all know we (Rita and I), maintain several web sites on the Internet. Actually I do most of the web work, Rita comes up with the ideas. (some of the better ideas were her doings). Then I transpose them into web publishing. Visit some of our sites.. and let us know what you all think! Nathan Mathena, 79th Illinois Infantry., enrolled at York(IL) Aug.2, 1862. He was 24 when he died on April 8, 1864 of pneumonia. He was captured, along with many of our Illinois brothers and cousins, at Chickamauga, on Sept. 19/20 1863. Most of them were sent to Richmond, then Danville before ending up in Andersonville Prison. My Great Grandfather Joseph Shedelbower was with the 38th Illinois Infantry, at the same battle. He too was incarcerated at Andersonville. I have records of at least four units from Illinois that were at Chicamagua. We also have some records of Confederate units with General Longstreet, from The Virginia area. How many Metheny/Matheny's were there on BOTH sides?? Here is our history of Brothers against Brothers, and Cousins against Cousins. This was one of the Great Battles of the Western Front.. and Our Ancestors were there, forever recorded in History.

Seems the winter is beginning to fade just a little. Spring is just around the corner. The kids here are anticipating the Baseball season, and Mark McGwire is at spring training with the St Louis Cardinals. Personally I don't follow baseball too much, but last year everyone watched as Mark, in his humble way toppled the all time record. It certainly sparked the baseball interest here!! There are lots of other things happening here, but I cannot go into detail at this time. But there have been some significant changes and things happening with my buisness deals. That I will save for more concrete information.
