The ORIGIN of the Metheny Name

The TRAVEL-LOG of Keith and Louise Matheny

Keith and Louise Matheny of Castle Hill, NSW Australia made
an around the world trip in 1998, tracing the migration from
Mathenay, France to the US.

I am David F. METHENY, a 58 year old Computer Specialist, who works at Scott Air Force Base in Southern Illinois. Along with my wife of 39 years (Rita K. (COX) Metheny), we have developed a keen interest in tracing our Family roots. I have been tracing the METHENY line for almost ten years, and my maternal line SHEDELBOWER, for about the same amount of time. My wife Rita watching me search the Web, decided to find her roots in the COX, HAYDEN, SMITH line, Now it becomes a battle to see who gets the Computer first. The Metheny (Matheny) line go back in the USA to the mid 1600's (Daniel Mathena(y) - b. 1638 in England, d. Stafford County, VA, 14 Oct 1685). The Shedelbower line has been difficult to find prior to 1840, as they were emmigrants from Bavaria. Also the spelling has different variations as in those days few could write, and when they did, it was generally phonetically. Thus I have SHEDELBOWER, SHEDDLEBOUR, SCHEDELBAUR and a few more. I do know that my Great Grandfather Joseph was born in Jasper County Illinois in 1844, served in the Civil War (See my pages), and is buried in Jasper County, Ste Marie Cemetery. His father (Spelled Martin Schedelbaur) was listed in the 1850 census as a emmigrant from Bavaria. (Germany). So far that has been the stumbling block
